The Portland Memory Garden has been chosen to receive the 2011 Therapeutic Garden Design Award, according to the Salem-News.
The annual award, sponsored by the American Horticultural Therapy Association, goes to parks nationwide that feature a therapeutic design and promote activity.
The Portland Memory Garden, located off of S.E Powell at 104th Avenue, was constructed for those suffering with memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, according to the article.
In May 2002 the memory garden, one of eight in the country, was dedicated. The gated garden features a circular pathway with visual landmarks and flowers and plants in raised beds for visual and memory stimulation.
