Rothko (1903-1970) is considered one of the leading artists of the 20th century and has strong ties to Portland. At the age of 10, he came to the city from Russia with his mother and older sister to join his father and brothers, according to the museum’s website.
Born Marcus Rothkowitz, Rothko attended Lincoln High School and first studied art at the Museum Art School before going off to Yale, New York City, and other destinations, according to the website. The exhibition will include 45 works from the artist ranging from pieces done in the late 1920s to those completed shortly before his death.
The Rothko family, the National Gallery of Art, and private collectors have loaned the pieces to the museum. The exhibition will run from Feb. 18-May 27.
